GTA1-Boxart

So, with the release of the new Grand Theft Auto V, I thought it would be appropriate to delve in to the origins of the game. That’s right, Grand Theft Auto; released for the Playstation in 1997. It is still one of my all time favourite games despite it beingreleased nearly 17 years ago.
Now, for the people who werent old enough to buy or play this game back then, this game may look simple and graphically crap but for those of us who grew up playing this game it will always hold a soft spot in our hearts even though it was sooooo god damn hard..

Now little ones before you ask, no this is not a third person game and no you cant go get a hair cut, this game had a birds eye view of all the pixelated action.

gta
It is made up of a series of levels which is set in one of the three main cities. In each level the player’s main objective is to reach a check point and perform set tasks for the city’s local crime syndicate. Each level has its own unique set of tasks, after you successfully complete missions you are rewarded with points that will open up the opportunity to attempt harder missions for higher rewards, while failing missions may permanently seal off opportunities for more tasks. Completing missions also increases the player’s multiplier which increases the points the player gets for doing other tasks If the player is arrested then their multiplier is halved. Unlike later games in the series, the player can be wasted in one hit without any body armour If the player is wasted then they lose a life, in both cases the player loses their current equipment. If the player is wasted too many times they lose and must restart the level from scratch.

What I personally loved about this game was that the player is free to do whatever they choose, you can rack up points by causing death and destruction by running over pedestrians and leaving a delightful red splat on the floor or steal and sell cars which can sometimes leave you with a tidy profit getting you closer to the large target money required to complete the level. Some criminal acts boost your points up a lot, for example; using a police car for running over people, that doubles the number of points received. Even during missions there is still some freedom, as most of the time you are free to choose the route to take and how you accomplish it, but the destination is usually fixed. It is this level of freedom which set Grand Theft Auto apart from other action based computer games at the time.
So now for my final word on this game. If you are playing GTA 5, why not take a break and check out the origins of this amazing series of games and I guarantee you will love it as much as I do and besides, you wouldn’t start a book from the middle would you?
